Ayla and 'The Clan'

Beginning with 'The Clan of the Cave Bear' we are introduced to Ayla; a five
year old Cro-Magnon girl who is left orphaned by a great earthquake. In shock and
hungry, she wanders the forest until she comes in contact with a huge cave lion who
puts his claw marks on her left thigh. Hurt and growing weaker, she follows the edge
of a great river and finally collapses; too weak to go any further.

She is found by a group of Neanderthals who call themselves "The Clan of
the Cave Bear". They too have been left homeless by the earthquake. Their medicine
woman, Iza, wants to save the child of "The Others" and the leader, Brun, reluctantly
agrees to let her bring the girl along as they search for a new cave in which to live.

Ayla has many exciting and interesting experiences with the people of the
Clan; some of them strange and frightening. However, if you would like to find out
more, you will have to get the book by Jean M. Auel. I'm not going to spoil it! But I
think if you enjoy historic fiction, you'll find this first volume of the Earth's Children®
series very absorbing reading.
